Purgatorium

Adult; Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror; (Market)

When his watch resets to zero, his morning starts again. A handsome, young urban professional awakens inside his cavernous high-rise apartment. He is an emotionless drone of a man content with his self-structured regiment and amazing wealth, and he is totally oblivious to his abnormal lifestyle. Every day lasts an hour with the time always ending right at 60 minutes, giving him only 5 minutes to stay at one specific time zone in his structured routine. He keeps reliving the same day over and over, barely able to remember anything from the day before and unable to maintain mental order as he stumbles through his strange existence. One day, his routine is interrupted when seven strangers separately appear. Everything slams to a halt as they tell him that his physical body is in a coma and his consciousness is currently in a purgatory-like realm. As his body lies in a coma, his mind has been living a lavish lifestyle at a price: his sinful memories and his autonomy. After finding out his life support is coming to an end in eight hours, he must now run a race to get his life back. He must rely on this group who seem to tender on truth and violence to get him to the finish line on time. He just needs to remember who he is and come to terms with what he has done if he's ever going to decide if he is a soul survivor ready for a second chance at life or a lost soul bound by no redemption. The clock is ticking, and if he is going to survive, he'll have to face his demons and outthink the clock that has constrained him for so long. For each minute that passes teeters the fine line between his life and death.

Assessment:

Plot: This novel is soundly structured and well plotted. And while the time element can be a little difficult for readers to keep track of at first, the story is nonetheless compelling.

Prose: The writing is visually descriptive and well crafted. The book balances mystery and suspense nicely, making for an enjoyable, well-paced read.

Originality: While the book is reminiscent of other works, it's ultimately original and inventive. The scenario is clever, and the world vividly represented.

Character Development: The protagonist begins mostly as a blank slate who uncovers his past. He is not always likable, but well rendered and believable. Supporting characters are sufficiently distinct in personality and depiction.

Authors Talk About It review

"Second chances are at the core of Carnathan's Purgatorium, it isn't a soft and fuzzy read. Instead, it's action-packed, and honestly, would make a sensational movie for the big screen. It will twist readers' minds while touching their hearts." - Winner of the Authors Talk About It book awards contest

Diary of Difference review

"The story will blow your mind. Expect to find a lot of unexpected things to happen, lots of twists, that will haunt you in a good way, for a very long time! It is so intriguing, unpredictable, and definitely worth reading. It makes you wonder about the true values in life, about who we really are, and all the sins we are making without realising the consequences."

Self-Publishing Review

Purgatorium is undeniably action-packed with many vivid cinematic elements, but it is also a deeply cerebral novel with elements of social commentary, as well as having spiritual undertones. Bizarre, dark, at times violent, Purgatorium is an original and entertaining work that will definitely appeal to those who like their science fiction overlaid with a glint of mysticism."

Tometender review

"This book is definitely a page-turner. I read it in one-sitting. The novel makes you feel like you are reading the Metamorphosis brought to you by the people behind the Matrix. Probably due to the author's screenplay background, the book is packed with graphic action sequences and nuanced depictions of characters and surroundings, making it easy to visualize the story. What waits ahead is a man's excruciating odyssey to find his way back, to his corporal and spiritual self. It's is a story of the reckoning with one's identity and redemption. This is a genre bending book. It is a thriller, a suspense, a science-fiction, a horror story, laced with fantasy. The message of love and the altruism is universally deemed. Besides redemption, the book also delves into profound human feelings of love, bereavement, regrets, internal growths, and coming-to-terms of one's flaws. It is so successful in invoking these inherent human emotions that you would find yourself deeply involved with the hero as you woe for his loss and cheer for his courage and decision to seek ablution of his sins. It is a fantastic read that leaves you with pondering and reflections."
